Beef Stroganoff

I had one of those Sundays.

One of THOSE Sundays where I didn't have anything waiting for me in the slow cooker when I got home from church.

But, it was remedied very quickly with this easy recipe! I found the original on the back of the Heinz HomeStyle Gravy Savory Beef Jar, but made a few tweeks to suit our family's taste, like no mushrooms (even though I would LOVE them) and a little less sour cream.

I did not tell my husband this was made with jarred gravy until he told me that it was good. He was raised in a "from-scratch-gravy-only" type of family and I have to agree, that is the best way to eat gravy. But I found these jars of gravy for 2/$1.00 at my local discount grocery store and figured I could use them for something. So, I said all that to say, if you don't like jarred gravy, go ahead and give this recipe a try anyway! It really does lose most of it's jarred flavor.

Plus it's only about $0.43/serving! So what do you have to lose in trying it? I loved it and had seconds. It's the perfect bowl of comfort food when you are tired and just want to get a hot meal in your belly.

Here is the breakdown of the per serving cost. As usual, this amount is not factoring in salt, pepper,  (and even the onions in this recipe since it's just a small amount) and the price could vary based on your region. I did factor in the cost of the gravy being $1.00 a  jar since that is more the normal price. I paid less than that though bringing my cost down closer to $0.35/serving. I also skimp on the meat in meals to save even more money. You could put a whole pound of ground beef in here, but I thought it was just fine with 1/2 pound. I buy my ground beef at Aldi for $1.99/pound.

1/2 pound ground beef-$1.00
8 oz wide egg noodles $0.50
1 jar beef gravy $1.00
1/4 cup sour cream $0.10 (?)
6 servings
Total $0.43/serving

Beef Stroganoff

1/2 pound ground beef
8 oz medium egg noodles
1 jar (12 oz) Beef Gravy
1/8 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp salt

Cook egg noodles in salted water until done, about 5-6 minutes.
Cook ground beef and onion until beef is cooked through and onion is tender. Drain and return to pan. Add gravy, salt and pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until gravy is hot and bubbling. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream. Serve with cooked egg noodles.

My $100 Kitchen Cabinet Makeover!

I'm so excited to share today's post. It's something I've been working on for about 2 months, on and off. But it is finished and so today I'm sharing how we renovated our kitchen cabinets for about $100. When we bought our house in a little over a year ago, I fell in love with the kitchen just by the listings photos. UPDATE!!! Check out this  post to see how I also stained my island! It was HUGE and there was about a billion cabinets. The kitchen in our old house was a pretty good size also and I knew I would not be content with a smaller kitchen. So these pictures sold me. We bought the house and moved in and I lived with the kitchen for awhile but the cabinet color was really bugging me. I liked the counter tops well enough but they clashed with the cabinets. We did not have the money to replace all those cabinets so the next decision was to either paint or stain them. I stumbled upon General Finishes Gel Stain and thought the id

Thrifty Thursday-Marked Down Bread

Today I am sharing a tip that I use to stretch my meals out a little.  I buy marked down Italian bread loaves in the store bakeries.  I bought this loaf for $.72. It was only $1.00 to begin with but $0.28 is $0.28! Plus that's not the only savings you get with this. I love those boxes of frozen garlic toast that are about $3.00 for 6 slices!!! That's crazy. But sometimes, I just really want some bread with my meal. So I slice up the loaf and portion it out in 4 pieces per bag.  I then put all the individual bags in one big freezer bag and freeze. When it's time to eat, just pull out a bag. They thaw quickly. I spread softened butter on each side and sprinkle with garlic salt. I sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and sometimes I add Parmesan cheese. Bake at 375 for about 7 minutes or until they reach the desired crispness. With those other boxes coming in at about $0.50/slice, these are so much cheaper!!

Slow Cooker Spicy Chicken Legs

This is an updated post of a recipe I did a while back, but it desperately needed new pictures! It's still one of our favorites! T his is one of my go-to meals for Sunday mornings. I put it on in the morning before I go to church and it's done by lunch time! I will sometimes put potatoes and carrots in another slow cooker so that I have an entire meal waiting for me. It's even better if I use liners in my slow cooker and then I don't even have a mess! This is definitely a winner winner chicken dinner then! I will sometimes make a double or triple batch of the seasoning mix so that next time I make this meal, it's already prepared, and makes the dish that much easier! Slow Cooker Spicy Chicken Legs 6 chicken legs or 3 leg-thigh quarters 2 tsp salt 1 tsp paprika 1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (depends on how spicy you want it) 1/2 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp dried parsley 1 tsp pepper 1/2 tsp garlic powder Mix together spices. Liberally rub onto the chick
