Farmhouse Bathroom Makeover in Purple & White

I get these ideas and they just won't let up until I can actually do them. My mom calls these "getting a bee in my bonnet".

Well, I had a bee in my bonnet yesterday.


This was our main bathroom when we moved in. These were the seller's towel and shower curtain.They had obviously updated a few things in this bathroom. But there is no window and it is very dark and dreary in here. Also, the paint was in a flat finish which shows up every dirty mark and imperfection. Plus, I just hated the color. It looks grey, but it's like a greige. I call it the color of cement. Blech.

So yesterday I had had it. The seller left the paint they used and there was a full gallon of the semi-gloss extra white they had used on the baseboards, doors and trim. I love the look of bead board in bathrooms when it goes up about 2/3 of the way. But we weren't messing with that right now. I was hoping I could get a similar effect by just painting the walls white 2/3 of the way up. I then thought about putting a dark blue on the top part of the wall.

I took my paint to Lowe's and they shook it up real good for me. It had been sitting awhile and I could not get it mixed properly now matter how much I stirred. I also bought a paintbrush, some rollers and frog tape. My total came to about $18. 

So, while my mother-in-law watched my girls for me, I got to work. I measured 62" up the wall and taped  all the way around.


I also took the rusted towel bar off the wall. I hated that thing.


And then I painted! It only took about 3 hours to do the whole project. 



Sorry the picture is blurry! Eek! I really wanted to incorporate some warm wood into the room, so I remembered that I had this shelf out in our shed. I got it last year at a yard sale for $2 and we had to find a use for it. I used the same gel stain to stain it as I did for our cabinets. Just one coat. 

When I took the tape off, (I was really anxious about getting straight lines) I decided that I really liked the look of the original paint color on top. So I scrapped the blue paint idea and started decorating!

I love that the two paint colors are not super obvious. I intentionally hung the shelf right at the line where the paint switched and it makes it blend really well.

The bright white paint going up only about 2/3 of the way makes the bathroom seem taller and much brighter. It feels so fresh and clean now. 



Here are some close-ups of my shelf. I found the bottle of bath salts at my favorite store! (If you guess Dollar Tree, you are right!) Can you believe it? I was surprised! The label looks so   farmhouse-y. And I love how the shelf turned out. It's exactly the warm wood I was hoping to have in here.

So my total renovation cost for this bathroom redo was about $18 (The cost of paint supplies) Plus the $1.00 bath salts. Everything else I had on hand already! That's what I call a frugal makeover!

Thrifty Thursday-Marked Down Bread

Today I am sharing a tip that I use to stretch my meals out a little.  I buy marked down Italian bread loaves in the store bakeries.  I bought this loaf for $.72. It was only $1.00 to begin with but $0.28 is $0.28! Plus that's not the only savings you get with this. I love those boxes of frozen garlic toast that are about $3.00 for 6 slices!!! That's crazy. But sometimes, I just really want some bread with my meal. So I slice up the loaf and portion it out in 4 pieces per bag.  I then put all the individual bags in one big freezer bag and freeze. When it's time to eat, just pull out a bag. They thaw quickly. I spread softened butter on each side and sprinkle with garlic salt. I sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and sometimes I add Parmesan cheese. Bake at 375 for about 7 minutes or until they reach the desired crispness. With those other boxes coming in at about $0.50/slice, these are so much cheaper!!

My Frugal Cottage/Farmhouse Decor and how YOU can get it.

I have been on a decorating spree lately. I just finished my cabinets ( see them in this post here !) and so I've been changing things up a little bit. Plus spring is almost here and so I've been getting my flowers out for it! I also love to see how inexpensively I can decorate while still looking nice. I love the stuff from Pottery Barn, Magnolia Market, etc. but here on THIS blog, I'm on a budget! My favorite stores are thrift stores, specifically the Goodwill or Goodwill Outlet and stores like Ross, Homegoods and Michaels. And of course, the Dollar Tree!
